Question: Are private sewers shown on sewer plans?
Answer: Private sewers are not the responsibility of Sewerage Undertakers and are not generally shown on the Public Sewer Map. From 1st October 2011 the majority of private sewers and lateral drains in England and Wales transferred into public ownership and are now the responsibility of the relevant Statutory Sewerage Undertaker. These formerly private sewers are being added to the public sewer map. As there has been no historical requirement to record the location of private sewers, it may be some time before the location of all of these are known.
